A submersible sewage electric pump is designed to operate completely below the liquid surface, but“submersible”does not mean“unlimited depth.”The maximum safe submersion depth is not a single universal number. It is defined by the pump manufacturer and depends on the motor design, mechanical seal, cable entry sealing system, cable length, and the hydraulic conditions of the sewage pit or wet well.
In practice, most standard submersible sewage pumps are rated for 5 m to 20 m of immersion depth.
Typical Maximum Submersion Depths
Different manufacturers give different limits even for similar pumps.
•Calpeda GX 40/GM 50 series:maximum submersion depth is 5 m for GX 40 and 10 m for GM 50,with suitable cable length.
•Horma WQ submersible sewage pump:10 m for smaller 2-pole units,up to 20 m for larger 2-pole or 4-pole units.
•DAB FK C wastewater pumps:maximum installation depth 20 m.
•Wilo submersible sewage pumps:commonly 20 m for PRO-type units.
•Grundfos SE/SEG-class wastewater pumps:often listed at 10–20 m depending on model.
So,unless the nameplate or manual states otherwise,a typical municipal or commercial sewage pump should not be assumed to exceed 20 m.
What Limits the Submersion Depth?
1.Hydrostatic pressure on seals and cable entry
Every extra meter of water adds about 0.1 bar of pressure. The mechanical seal, cable gland, and junction chamber must withstand that pressure without allowing sewage or moisture into the motor housing.
IP68 alone is not enough information.IP68 only means“continuous immersion under conditions specified by the manufacturer.”It does not automatically mean 20 m or 50 m.
2.Cable length and cable sealing
If the pump is placed deeper than the supplied cable length, the installer may be tempted to splice the cable. Most manuals prohibit field splicing of the motor cable because it can destroy the watertight integrity.
The original cable entry, compression gland,or epoxy seal is pressure-rated for the designed depth.Extending the pump beyond that depth requires factory-approved cable length.
3.Motor cooling method
Many sewage submersible motors are cooled by the surrounding liquid. As long as the motor housing is fully covered, cooling is usually adequate.
However, some larger units use a cooling jacket or external cooling circuit. If the pump is installed too high, too low,or in a narrow pit with poor circulation, motor overheating can occur even if the depth is within the rated limit.
4.Pit dimensions and solids settling
Sewage pumps are often placed above the pit floor using a base, guide rail,or support frame. This prevents sludge accumulation around the suction inlet.
If the pump is set too deep in a shallow sump,it may sit directly in settled solids, causing clogging, uneven flow, and seal contamination.
Minimum Submergence Is Equally Important
Maximum depth gets more attention, but minimum liquid level is just as critical.
Most installation manuals state that the pump must remain submerged during operation. The liquid level should not fall below:
•the top of the volute,or
•the top of the motor housing,or
•a specified minimum distance above the basin floor.
Examples:
•FloFab submersible sewage pumps:minimum level should not drop below the volute;recommended not below motor-housing top.
•Barnes SEV/EHV series:minimum liquid level of 6.5 in or 4.5 in above pump bottom depending on model.
•Champion non-clog pumps:minimum about 10 in above basin floor.
Running the pump“dry”or partially exposed can cause:
•motor overheating,
•seal damage,
•cavitation or vibration,
•premature bearing failure.
Therefore, the correct question is not only how deep can it go,but what is the operating level range of the sump.
Safe Installation Rules
When determining the allowable submerged depth, follow these rules:
1.Check the nameplate and manual first
The rated maximum immersion depth is model-specific.
2.Do not exceed the cable rating
Use factory-supplied cable length or approved extension method only.
3.Never lift the pump by the power cable
Use the lifting chain, rope,or guide-rail coupling system.
4.Keep the motor housing submerged
Set float switches so the pump stops before the level drops below the motor.
5.Confirm seal and cable-gland pressure rating
Especially for deep wet wells, hazardous locations,or grinder pumps.
6.Respect liquid conditions
Most sewage pumps are limited to around 40°C,pH 6–10,and a certain solids-passage size.
Conclusion
A submersible sewage electric pump can usually be submerged anywhere from a few centimeters to 10–20 meters, depending on the model.Common limits are:
•Small drainage-type sewage pumps:5–10 m
•Standard municipal sewage pumps:10–20 m
•Heavy-duty wastewater pumps with proper seals/cables:up to 20 m or as listed by manufacturer
There is no universal“maximum depth”for all submersible sewage pumps. The safe depth is the lower of:
•the manufacturer’s stated maximum immersion depth,
•the cable length,
•the pressure rating of the seal and cable entry,
•and the minimum liquid level required for motor cooling.
Stay within the nameplate limit, keep the motor submerged during operation, and never assume IP68 means“any depth.”
If the pump must be installed deeper than 20 m,select a model explicitly rated for that depth or consult the manufacturer’s technical department before installation.
